  1. It was really interesting to know things from another culture so different from ours, in my case I met a Korean called Jang Ray, I think it's a very nice person, but I met him quickly, he told me that Korean culture has important things, such as respect for old people, something very different that happens in our country, where we dont give any importance to the experience, another thing I found important is the respect that they have for their culture and customs.
Korea is a developed country they have a good quality life as Jan Ray told me. his country has strong traditions that are hard to change but he thinks that people accept their lifestyle and has learned to respect it, Jang also said that the concept of family is very similar than Costa Rica, and people usually get married and have children, but in some cases remain living with their families because in korea to buy a house is very expensive, this is a country that is overpopulated and has a stressful style life.
learning about other cultures is very important because it enriches our thinking and acting, a cultural exchange with a person of another latitude allows us to put the true dimension value our own culture, to know about Korean food, traditions, culture, I realize how important it not lose our roots and preserve traditions, we often forget our values and admire other countries with more developed, obviously there are things to change, but that happens in all societies around the world.

  3. My experience with my international friend was really poor in terms of friendship. Actually, it was something more like my international contact. I didn´t find out much about Hazim, he didn´t tell me anything about his family neither. He just told me some general facts about Malaysia. He told me Malaysia had dry and rainy season just as Costa Rica. He also said that Bahasa Melayu was the official language and Islam the official religion. “The food here is delicious,” he said “and i hope you can try this if you come to Malaysia.”

But even though I learned many different things about Malaysia I didn´t know. I learned about his culture, with the food for example, they don´t usually drink chocolate, instead they drink milo, which is a drink made out of a combination between chocolate and malt and it was interesting to see the packages of milo Nestle brand in google. I also learned that Malaysia is a country rich in biodiversity, I liked seeing the animals and different species they have in there. He told me there were many differences between our countries, and I think that is more evident comparing the religious culture, because we are influenced just by the Catholicism but they are Muslims, Taoists, Catholics, Buddhists and many other traditional religions from Asia.

I enjoyed researching about Malaysia and finding out it is such a beautiful place, though i’m kind of disappointed of not have spoken with Hazim more. I think if we had had the chance to speak a little bit more, we would have enjoyed knowing more about our countries from each other and not from Wikipedia. Also, if I had talked more to him, we would have shared our ideas and met each other. I´m happy that now I know these things about Malaysia. I really enjoyed doing that.

I loved the temples, specially the Buddhist ones.

  4. My experience with the international friends was very interesting. I had to talk with two people, Syafika and Hyojung Jung. I established a Good online friendship with the girl from South Korea, Hyojung. We have spoken several times and we also had exchanged email that spoke about our countries and the culture. We made each other several questions and I found out that she is a really nice person, very gentle and talkative. We get along pretty well after that and I have never had a friend who lived in the other side of the planet!
As we spoke via email, she told me she lived in a place called Busan, which is a large beach in Korea. She also told me she loved going out with her friends after class and she asked me whether I had gone to her country. She sent me some pictures of Busan and it looks beautiful. Then, she talked a lot of the Korean food and everything looked delicious, I didn't know it looked that good and if I had known that before, I would have tried it. She even told me that if I wanted to visit Korea sometime, I could contact her so she could show me around. My experience with her was really good.
On the other hand, I started to talk to Syafika but she didn't answer on time and she sent me like three emails only. She didn't talked much about her place of living, which is called Owning and didn't send me pictures. She told me she was a Muslim and that was why she didn't eat pork. She told me she was nineteen and that she loved to play video games. I kept asking her about everything but she didn't reply me back.
To finish, I have to say that this had been one of the most interesting things that I had experienced and I really liked trouble make a friend outside this country. I hope to keep in touch with them or at least with Hyojung and I also hope she had had a good time chating with me.

  5. I must say that was confusing for me try to understand every e-mail I got from Gap! Even though I asked for many things, he wasn’t able to answer all of them as I would like. But the good news are that he did share some of his personal experiences he got all through these years. I was expecting him to talk a little more about Thailand’s culture but he didn’t. I can’t complain, he is such a nice person and what I liked the most was his enthusiasm when he answered the e-mails, I have to say I had a great experience! Let me share with you some of his experiences and what he told me.
I remembered his first e-mail where he told me he was very shy and that that experience seemed to be crazy!! I thought the same but at the same time I was excited! I’ve been a very open mind person so I really like to know people that don’t have any complex or prejudice with others, that’s something I appreciate! So it was surprising when he told me that I could ask whatever I want! I supposed him was more conservative, you know, because of the culture. I figured out that he likes electronic music moreover he said he wanted to learn how to be a DJ controller! Music was something we have in common.
I got really surprised when he told me he had visited so many countries around Asia such as Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and so on.
He told me not much about cultures I don’t know why. Some that he said was “Chinese people in Malaysia celebrate their Chinese new year wearing red clothes and meeting with their relatives”. Then he told me that Thailand’s culture celebrates its new year from 13th to 15th in April, and that celebration has its own name which is “Songkran” he also said he came back to Thailand on those days, met with his family and splashed water.
He has had many experiences by living as a foreigner he told me that he moved out of Thailand when he was 13, it was difficult for him at first, then he used to it, but if he hadn’t moved to Malaysia, he wouldn’t have learned English. Other reason is because he said he wanted to learn businesses for his father has his own, and maybe he would be the successor in some future.
I couldn’t find any similarities between our cultures, first because he didn’t talk to much about and second well, I think there’s none… =/
He was completely the opposite of what I thought!! Something is for sure; he isn’t the typical conservative guy from Asia!! If I hadn’t had this experience, I wouldn’t have changed my mind of people from there! We all are so different, we must learn how to be respectful when new things come to our lives, though they have some controversies!
It is really amazing to came across new things, to know people from other borderlines and be able to communicate with them, to learn that even though our skin, eyes, hair are not the same we aren’t that different and who knows, maybe you could find what you where looking for!!
So just to finish, I would like to say that it was an incredible experience, Gap is such a nice guy that I could learn some things from! I hope you all have at least a good one and would keep in touch with them!!

  6. Well it was a nice experience, we shared lot things. In my case I talked with two girls, both are from Thailand and both study in Malaysia. I didn’t talk too much with one of them, because she was sick from one to three weeks, her nickname was Sin. I talked almost every week with Kae, the other person, and she shared some aspects about Thai culture, food, etc. I enjoyed a lot to talk with her; because it was my first time that I talked with Asian people, well in general that I had to talk with people from another continent. One thing that I liked the most was to know how they live, because they have a culture very different from here; it was interesting to know what they some activities, gestures, etc.
In one email we talked about our cultures, she told me they had a very popular festival, it is called “Loy Krathong”, it takes three days and it happens at the beginning of the twelfth month of Thailand’s lunar calendar. She said, “We celebrate it to let go the bad luck and bad feelings and welcome the good luck and happiness”; that was interesting to me because here in Costa Rica we don’t have something similar, I think just the peregrinate. She told me about her favorite food, it was a spicy food. I think It’s like part of Thai people cook spicy food, they like it a lot. Thai people are very polite, they say hello, bye and apologize in a very polite way, it was very interesting to me to know that.
I thought there wasn’t much difference between our culture, I don’t know why I thought it was supposed to be like that, but when I started to talk with her, I realized that there are cultures very different from our even in our country. I didn’t know too much about the other person, if I had had the opportunity to communicate more often with her, I would have enjoyed. I really enjoyed that activity because I am a curious person, so it’s interesting to me to know about culture and to meet people outside Costa Rica.

  7. The experience with my international friend was interesting but we had some problems of communication.

First of all I had the opportunity to know new things about other country thanks to Yah.
I really enjoyed the culture of Thailand especially their festivals like the Loy Krathong, someday I would like to see all those beautiful flowers with candles on the river, also The Songkran festival, the meaning of this is very interesting because most Thai people go back to their hometowns to meet their elders and let them know how important they are for them.

Secondly I would have liked to know more about Yah, maybe we didn't have the opportunity to talk enough because she was on vacation a few days and the emails I received from her were with lack of information, She told me that she was studying English and she said,"I am muslim." She asked me about my family but she didn't talk about hers, I think If she hadn't been on vacations, she would have talked more.

Another thing I enjoyed was describing the different traditions that we have in Costa Rica, to talk her about Holy week, Traditional food and our parades. It was a nice experience to show her how our country is, what she can expects if she visits Costa Rica, things that describe us better and also never hurts remind us how our history was and where we come from.

Finally, I realized that Thailand is a beautiful place, the temples are amazing and the big cities too, meeting someone new is always interesting for me, I really enjoyed the time I spent talking with Yah and her country.

  8. Firstly, about the experience that I got talk with my international friend was amazing, because I my case never in my life, I could have imagined that would have the chance to know a person of another country, I had not even imagined have the privilege to talk with a person outside of my continent. I my personal opinion, I like the kind of people for your plenty discipline and big effort since when they are younger is inculcated from her parents in order to attain her goals and improve every day your skills in order to promote competition with the other countries, a clear example is my friend in which she is able to speak four languages, this is a great advantage if she wants to travel some day or work in the business field.
Finally, learning many languages always there will be ups and downs in the process, looking back on the experience currently, I was wrong to think that English is just a tool to get work in order to earn money, the main purpose of learning any language should always be the idea of build bridges each other in which may form tighter bonds, if this naive idea can become in your motivated in learning any language you might even discover some unexpected positives.
